Elk River

Elk River Municipal Utilities (ERMU) is located in the City of Elk River, the county seat of Sherburne County. In addition to serving electric customers in Elk River, ERMU also serves customers in Big Lake Township, Dayton, and Otsego. ERMU was originally incorporated in 1915 as a privately owned electric utility and was purchased by City of Elk River in 1945. Since 1997, the City of Elk River has been known as “Energy City,” a community for the promotion and demonstration of efficient and renewable energy products, services, and technologies. ERMU owns local generation: emergency generation from a diesel power plant and renewable generation from a landfill-gas-to-electric power plant. In addition to being the home to two Fortune 50 data centers, the community has a growing industrial and commercial customer base. Joining in 2013, ERMU is now the 12th member of MMPA.

    Clean Energy Choice

Clean Energy Choice is an affordable, low-cost way for residential electric customers to support renewable energy. The program offers residential customers with the option to elect to have 50%, 75%, or 100% of their electricity from renewable sources. This is in addition to the 17% renewable energy that is provided to all MMPA customers, as required by Minnesota law. The renewable energy for the Clean Energy Choice program comes from the Minnesota Municipal Power Agency’s renewable resources and renewable purchases from other utilities.  For more information on MMPA’s renewable energy resources, click here.
